Coffee Grounds – and how to reuse them
I am trying very hard to reuse, reduce, and recycle, so I look at things that I use in a different way. Now you might ask, “What does this have to do with Pinch Your Pennies?” It has a lot to do with it, these ideas will save you money and isn’t that what this site is all about?Coffee grounds make a great deodorizer. When you have finished with your morning coffee, dump the coffee grounds onto a cookie sheet and spread them out. Leave the cookie sheet on the counter top and let the coffee grounds dry all day. Once dry, fill an empty butter bowl with them. Punch some small holes in the lid of the butter bowl and place the lid on tightly. Place your reused coffee grounds deodorizer in the refrigerator. You can repeat the process and put on in your freezer.
Did you know that some plants love acidic soils (azaleas and roses to name a couple). If you don’t have a lot of acid in your soil, it can be costly to get your soil acidic. But here’s a tip, using coffee grounds. Scratch the ground around your plants with a rake and sprinkle your coffee grounds into the dirt. This little trick will give your plants the acid they love and you will get beautiful plants.
Adding coffee grounds to your compost bin will help add nutrients, that will in turn help your plants thrive.
Do you have a problem with ants, snails and slugs…well, they hate coffee grounds. Sprinkling some coffee grounds around your plants will keep the snails and slugs away. And if you pour your coffee grounds over ant piles, they won’t stick around long either.
Pour coffee grounds on any greasy area that needs to be cleaned up. Allow the coffee grounds a few seconds to soak up the grease and then use a damp rag to wipe away the grounds and the grease. If you are cleaning an item that is greasy and grimy, then pour some coffee grounds into a rag and wipe the item until the grease and grime is gone.
Cut orange peels up into small pieces and mix with coffee grounds and sprinkle in your flower beds to keep the cats from using your gardens as a toilet.
Does your dog have fleas? Shampoo as you normally would and then work coffee grounds into their fur, getting as close to the skin as you can. Finish up with a good brushing. The fleas will be gone and your dog will be left with smooth and shiny fur.
Leftover coffee can be used to hide furniture scratches. Using a Q-tip, dip it in your left over coffee and run the Q-tip over the scratch. Allow to dry.
