Go Green and Save Money
A lot of people think that going green is expensive. I won’t lie, it can be if you are making BIG changes…sun panels, wind tunnels, etc., but you can do a few thing around your house…that can help you go green and save money…Ready to see how easy it is?
- Turning off appliances and other items that you aren’t using is great, but you can save even more money, but unplugging them. Vampire Electric is a term used for items that continue to use electricity even when they are turned off. To make unplugging easier, plug your items into a surge protector. This way you only have one plug to unplug.
- Install a digital thermostat. This way you can program the temperature better. You will have better control over when it comes on. If you aren’t home during the day, then why do you need to heat your home? Set the thermostat to come on only if the house temperature gets low as say 50′, but an hour before you get home program it to heat the house to the temperature that you are comfortable with. Same thing for the night…when you are tucked into bed and have covers then you don’t need the temperature to be 72′…turn the temp down to 60′ and have it warm up just before you get up.
- Use Energy Efficient Bulbs…you will be quite surprised at how much this can save you on your electric bill. If you can’t afford to do all your bulbs at one time, then start with the lights you use the most and work your way around until you have all of them done.
- Upgrade your appliances to energy star appliances. There are even tax deductions that you can qualify for when you upgrade.
- Installing low flow shower heads can reduce the amount of water you use, which in turn will reduce the amount of electric you use.
- Upgrade your toilet. Toilets from years back use a lot more water than the ones they have today. You can even get one that is dual flush…one button for liquid and one button for solids.
