Own a Home? You can still save money…

You own a home and you are trying to save money, right?  Here are some simple tips to help you do just that…Make sure you keep the heating and cooling system in tip top shape.  You don’t always have to replace an older system (depending on how old it is), but you do need to inspect your household items.  Make sure they are running well, make sure filters are changed, items are cleaned, etc.  A well run machine will save you money.

Learn some DIY techniques.  You won’t believe how much money you can save just by doing it yourself.  There are plenty of books and websites that you can go to and/or read about.  I think you will be quite surprised at how easy some home repairs can be.

Keep an eye on the foundation of your home.  If you start to see any cracks, get them repaired.  The longer you let these cracks get wet or keep growing, then more it will cost in the long run.  It might be a simple fix in the beginning, but if you wait, it might just cost you a lot more.

Watch your landscaping.  You don’t want trees too close to the house.  Their branches can scratch the siding and their roots can cause more damage under your house.  If you have bushes, you want to make sure you keep them trimmed back so that moisture doesn’t get trapped between the house and the bush, because this can see cause rotting in your siding.

If your house has a wood siding, then keeping it painted is the cheapest thing you can do.  Once that wood gets exposed to the elements, it will rot and then you have more repairs.  Which means you will be spending more money.

Clean those gutters!  You want water to be able to drain properly.  Which means you want it to drain from the gutter to the downspout.  Not sit in the gutter and rot out your roof.  Cleaning those gutters will save you a lot of money down the road.

Keep your insurance cost low by making sure your home is as safe as it can be.  Install deadbolt locks.  They are harder to break into than knob locks.  Purchase fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.  Safety bars on your sliding glass doors is another safety trick that can help and it costs very little to get.
